Frequently Asked Questions
Is this boat insured, and who pays for damage?
Yes — every boat on charter.boats is insured by its operator; we require it. The policy covers the vessel for fire, collision and third-party liability. For damage it doesn't cover, your liability is usually limited to the security deposit, except where the operator's terms say otherwise. Operator terms: The operator delivers the yacht insured against all navigation risks, special average and third-party liability, and gives the charterer a copy of the insurance conditions before embarkation.
Do I need a sailing licence in Italy?
The skipper needs a valid sailing licence and VHF certificate, ideally issued by their country of residence (an ICC is widely accepted).
Can I bring my dog or other pets on board?
Unfortunately not. Our terms don't allow any kind of animals on board during the charter.
Are there limits on how I can use the boat?
The boat is for pleasure cruising only, so you can't carry goods or paying passengers, give sailing lessons, or sublet it. Racing or regattas need our written permission, and towing is only allowed in an emergency. Firearms and drugs are not allowed on board.
Where am I allowed to sail?
You can cruise within the agreed cruising area, staying between safe ports and anchorages. You may not leave Italian territorial waters without our written consent, and you must avoid areas affected by conflict or where navigation is forbidden.
What happens if bad weather affects my trip?
If wind and sea are, or are forecast to be, above Beaufort 5, you should stay in port or head to the nearest safe harbour. You should also bring your return forward if bad weather is forecast. Weather or port authority delays and interruptions are not our responsibility.
What should I do if something breaks or gets damaged during my charter?
Tell us in writing within 24 hours and only keep sailing if it won't make things worse or put anyone at risk. Get our written approval before arranging repairs if you want to be reimbursed. If the boat is out of action for long enough, you may be compensated for the lost time.
About Marina di Portorosa
Carved out of the Sicilian coastline near Messina in the 1980s through ambitious private investment and literal dredging of the land, Marina di Portorosa is a 650-berth facility that can handle vessels from 6 to 35 meters across 4 kilometers of moorings. Read more →
When is the best time to sail in Italy?
May–October, warm and settled in summer; July–August are hottest and busiest, with afternoon thermal breezes common.
